What ever happened to devfs?

Anybody know? It was dead useful since you didn't have 1,000 device nodes
that were jsut confusing the issue. I used the patch on SuSE 7.2 and was
impressed. However, upgrading the kernel for fixes meant that I had to
rerun the changes. A bit of a PITA. I was hoping that it would become the
default. It doesn't look like it. Any reason why?
