Well I must say that the worst problem i have with screen
is when I forget to start screen before I start the program
I want to run under screen. I don't think dtach could solve
    that problem.

Seems dtach works as intended, but sometimes I really want
some of the other features of screen. In some cases I have
used screen just because of the terminal emulation. It is
great if you are stuck with a crappy terminal.

Any suggestions on how to use only the terminal emulation
part of screen without the detach feature?

Sometimes the multiple terminals feature is also nice. For
example if you are using a dumb terminal on a serial line.
(OK, I must admit it might be more than a year since I
    last did that).

One feature I miss in screen is a possibility for a
reconnecting client to enforce it's environment and/or
working directory for newly created shells.
