e2fsck bombing because new kernel incompatible despite correct setting

I have a Pentium I/233 MMX system, and when I compile
Linux kernel 2.4 or 2.6 for that processor type,
several programs bomb on startup ; I believe they
bomb during system calls. I set the processor type to
Pentium MMX, which should be correct. The two program
I notice dying are a PCMCIA driver and not tragically
e2fsck which prevents the system coming up.

The distro I am using is Slackware 10 : Zipslack.

    My hypotheses about the prognosis:

    1. gcc bug
    2. config bug resulting in wrong CPU type compiler switch
    3. insufficient pizza intake on my part
