What Linux lacks : better in-kernel user interface

    It seems to me that although X is widely used and useful,
    some of its basic functions could also be put in the kernel
    which would improve performance. In particular, if a person
    today wants to write a framebuffer+mouse+keyboard based
    application, this can be very painful. (Granted there is svgalib
    but in my experience it is very buggy--I am using kernel 2.4.18).
