Okay, I know that make config says that the EXT3 journaling file system is
"EXPERIMENTAL" and I was willing to risk it for the benefits which have been
IMHO quite good in terms of time saved recovering from a hung system and
    most system crashes as well.

Okay, I even had a reasonably recent backup of my most important work files.

But STILL ... Yeah, the system crash was my fault and no one else is to
blame, but the root partition on the HD is now "unrecoverable". Well, it's
still there. The HD isn't toast, I can still boot MS-DOS from the 1st
partition and the 2nd, /boot, partition is readable as well.

And I'm sure that most of the OS files are quite intact too, only I can't
    get to them (yet).

I've found the Stellar Phoenix utility on the web for $89 and I wonder if
anyone's tried this yet and had any success.

Are there any other recovery programs available? Google didn't show
anything within the first few pages of hits and I just don't have the
patience to wade through 56,000 of them, mostly chatter about the normal
EXT3 recovery procedure that takes place after a non-clean shutdown.

If there's nothing in the open-source world for this, I just might take a
    crack at it later.

        TIA
            Norm
