Available RAM configuration

Hello:

Does anyone know if there is a way to reconfigure Linux (2.4) to use
less physical RAM then actually available in hardware? For example, a
device has 48 Mb of physical RAM, but Linux actually uses only 32Mb to
work with. It doesn't have to be done dynamically - only once at the
boot time.
Why on earth I need that, you might ask. The reason is that I need to
know the smallest possible amount of memory my device can reasonable
run on without building new hardware to do the tests.

Thanks for all help,
-Ilya
