She was correct. The change has accelerated too, and the
differences in even the past 5-10 years are very noticeable.

Well, that would be just a really good trick. There are no
trees within perhaps 200 miles, unless you count willows as a
tree, and then it is over 100 miles to the nearest willow that
is more than 4 feet high.
However, what they actually quoted was Benedict Jones, from the
Koyukuk River, which is three or four hundred miles south of
here, in what is called the "Interior" of Alaska. That is the
south side of of the Brooks Range. The north side is called the
North Slope, which is the common term that everyone uses for
where the oil patch is.

The story is pretty well written. The pictures they have a good
too, and depict typical visuals of what is here. The picture of
a house would have been better if they had backed off a bit to
show more of what surrounds that house. It is a "typical" older
home, and is weather beaten with "well lived in" look. It is
surrounded by the tools of a subsistence lifestyle: boats,
4-wheel ATVs, sleds, etc. etc.
They have a *great* picture of Bertha Levitt too! The elders here
are a wonderful resource, and a great influence on the community.
