Thank you all for input.
Jens,
It might help if you would set up some PCs with Linux and showI was wondering if there was a distro that closely resambles an XP
your boss that everything is still properly works.
environment. Any suggestions?
Also, would Linux desktop be able to write (with proper software) PC
formatted floppies and can floppies automount/ready to be written?

Trivial - the X-protocol was written with having an application
running on one machine and the graphical output going to another
(and the user input also coming from that other machine) in mind
from the very beginning. I regularly have to run graphical appli-
cations for test purposes on machines that are in another country.
The only problem is the speed of the network connection, but I
guess that's similar with Windows.
3. Would we be able to easily install Linux with GUI on the existing PCs?
If you don't have some rather unusual hardware it may be rather
easy to get it to run. Boot from some Live-CD like Knoppix and
see if everything gets recognized and is properly supported.
4. What strategy have you (or would you) use to convince your boss to at
least give the migration a proper consideration?
It might help if you would set up some PCs with Linux and show
your boss that everything is still properly works. If you have a
non-computer-savvy collegue that you can ask to test how easy or
difficult it is to adapt to the new environment a positive review
of him/her might also be a "selling point".
5. I also want to convince myself that this is a right path, before I
even
try to convince my boss. How?
Is there any other way then trying it out given that only you
know about all things that need to be considered?
Regards, Jens
