I'm starting to presume the Nvidia SATA controller may simply not have any
hotplug capability, at least not as configured on a mainboard. I have now
freed up an eSATA card (a PCI card that has 2 eSATA connectors on the back
and 2 SATA connectors internally). I'll probably put it in the new machine
this coming weekend.
