        I've just build a new kernel - based on 2.4.18; and when it boots it
    comes up

    Uncompressing Linux ....
    invalid comprssed format (err=2)

    -- System halted

        What's the cause of this ? or more importantly, what can I do to fix
    it ?

        I do

    make mrproper
    make xconfig
    make dep
    make clean
    make bzImage
    make modules
    make modules_install
    copy the image
    copy the map
