You can try and have a look at the BIOS temperatures displayed in
the BIOS setup of your machine.
Just plug the fan out and then watch the temperature climb into
unacceptably high temperature ranges. This will take less than one
minute to reach unsafely high temperatures.
Be prepared to shut it off just short of the high temperature
level.

So if your CPU cooler has a catastrophic failure (i.e. ceases
working from one momenr to another), I guess you're out of luck,
because you'll only have about one minute to do a proper shutdown.
If the cooler's performance degrades over time, you might be
better off as the temperature of the CPU will rise slowly.

I know because I nearly fried a CPU like that because at the time
I didn't know that a cooler was required.
