Hi Everyone,
This is essentially one question. It correlates with the first topic
of an Agere installation report (which followed immediately in the
command line space after I installed an RPG for my Lucent PCI modem
last week, the lines of which I copied and duplicated a few days ago
into comp.os.linux.hardware) to which Markku Kolkka kindly directed my
attention--asking if I had read what actually Agere had to say in
those paragraphs. I had not--but I'm trying now. (Markku also
pointed to two other parts of the Agere report; and they may comprise
some later questions that I would want to post to the group.)
This is a rather complex layout for an ng question, so I'll strive to
be concise: What I'll do first is finish my question at the top here,
and then the text of the files will be pasted into the trailing space.
Markku saw this:
> > Your system is lacking Default lines in /etc/modules.conf
> > which are usually needed to support the modem communications protocol
> > PPP.
> > Some modem installations replace these Defaults

...and he replied:
> Did you follow those instructions?
I answered "no."
But I am looking at the instructions now. I'm ashamed to say I don't
have enough of a background to decipher them.
I can say with certainty that the file /tmp/ltmodem/tmpfile flat out
doesn't exist on my machine.
The "suspect line" recited above--cat / tmp/ltmodem/tmpfile--is in
/usr/share/doc/ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_6-8.26a9/LTinstall.txt (for my
judgement), but LTinstall.txt is recursive; i.e., that same passage:
> > Your system is lacking Default lines in /etc/modules.conf
> > which are usually needed to support the modem communications protocol
> > PPP.
> > Some modem installations replace these Defaults

...is itself in LTinstall.txt
Lastly, /etc/modules.conf contains some lines, but I don't know where
to add to the script. I also don't know what to add.
I will now duplicate both files in there entireties. The first,
LTinstall.txt, will be set off at the top by a preceding "(1)", and
the second file, modules.conf, will be set off by a preceding "(2)".
I am indebted to the group for your patient and generous help. I will
in return offer to help others with what knowledge I can impart.
Thanks again,
-Rob

For soft modems in AC'97 controller slots, the bus PCI_ID describes
the Controller
and the Subsystem PCI_ID the modem card inserted into it. A soft
modem chipset
must be determined (guessed ?) to guide the choice of driver
resources.
It may be useful to download http://www.yourvote.com/pci/vendors.txt
and search it for vendor with and without caps, for example: both

ltmodem-kv-Kernel_FL-LTver--.CPU.rpm explains the versioning.
LTver 8.22a5 is the release of the resource
used in compiling and assembling driver packages.
8.22 is the Agere core code designation.
A suitable installer is not available as of this 2002 Nov 13 update.
Check in the section redhat at http://www.heby.de/ltmodem

If not present use the ltmodem-8.22a5.tar.gz compiler kit.

Often a ranking System_CPU > Target_CPU will be problem free,
but vice versa could be a problem!

Your system is lacking Default lines in /etc/modules.conf
which are usually needed to support the modem communications protocol
PPP.
Some modem installations replace these Defaults
with lines specific to particular modem hardware.
There may be problems using the Lucent/Agere modem without these
Default lines.
The suspect lines are:
------------------------------
cat /tmp/ltmodem/tmpfile
------------------------------
and are being inserted in
/usr/share/doc/ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_6-8.26a9/LTinstall.txt for your
judgement.
Should you insert them in /etc/modules.conf, inform the System with
/sbin/depmod -a
