Google was my friend this time. I found a site that mentions the sound
distortion problem I am having with 2.4.20/Alsa VT8233 driver, and it
offers a work around...

To get distortion free mp3/ogg/wav/ect. play back at least, you must use
XMMS and download the crossfade plugin from the XMMS home page. The
crossfade plugin isn't used as much for adding crossfading effects to XMMS,
but to allow the user to change the output sampling rate from the default
44.1Mhz to 48Mhz. The reason this works is explained on the page linked to
above.
