Hi Mike, I don't have your hardware, but your symtoms are very much like
those I had on a Sil3112 controller with 2 SATA drives attached.

The base problem is that most kernels don't have the SATA controller chip
drivers in them because they are still relatively new. You need at least a
2.4.21 kernel or later. It also depends on what was built into the kernel
so don't depend on the number.

The second problem is that you also need to have the ataraid driver
installed as well. Again it can be built into the kernel or you can load it
manually using modprobe.

On my system (with a later install cd) I could use

modprobe silraid
modprobe ataraid

to get both drivers installed and make the array visible. I don't know the
name of the promise driver.

You could have a look in the redhat forums or Gentoo's forums where a lot of
these things are discussed. Also you might want to try SUSE8.2 which I
found had all the drivers in its install kernels and had no problem
installing on my hardware where as RH9 and MDK9 would not. My current
distro is Gentoo which you also might want to look at because you can
decide what you want to install into the kernels.

Hope this helps.
Derek.
