Maybe you need to do something like

lilo: linux root=/dev/hda1
then try /dev/hda2
then /dev/hda3
then /dev/hda4

Another way to rectify the same problem is to move the drive from the first
ide channel to the 2nd, or vica versa.

Even if you are sure that you had it it on the first ide channel on both
machines,
the existence of a ATA100, serial ata, raid or PCI ide controller in one or
the other can confuse this issue.

try reading the kernel messages to see what device the hard drive is, and
what partition it is .,

when it boots, at the option root=/dev/hde5, if thats what it wants to
here !
