Distribution Suggestions for Old Small Notebook?

     Anyone put a fairly recent Linux distribution on an old, small
notebook? I have a 486SLC-based machine with 8Mb ram and 500Mb disk that
I'd like to set up. What distribution did you use? Did you have to do
anything special? (Was your machine as small as mine?)
     Replies from those who have "been there, done that" will be most
appreciated but all suggestions are welcome.
