(Just in case someone has this same trouble and searches for help.)
I'm running Suse 8.1. I needed some features in the 2.4.21 kernel so I
upgraded from 2.4.18. After I got the new kernel all working, I noticed
my network interface (eth0) was no longer able to see the network. I had
previously been using the nVidia onboard network interface, using the
nforce2 driver. (There is also a 3-Com interface on the motherboard, but
I never got it to work. Didn't try much because I only needed the one
connection.)
I tried everything I could think of to debug, with no luck. It really
seemed like I shoudn't be having trouble. I got all kinds of diagnostics
out of the kernel at boot, showing no problems. I checked the back of the
case -- the status LED showed a connection, but the transmit light never
blinked.
A couple days ago, just to give it a try, I switched my cable to the other
port. Blink, blink, blink goes the transmit LED. Somehow the new kernel
swapped eth0 and eth1. (And managed, without my help, to identify and
work with the 3-Com interface.)
So now it works! Though all the other machines on the network got rather
excited that my MAC had changed.
Hope that helps someone. :)
