The machines are running SuSE 8.2. With the shipped kernel DMA didn't
work at all, even for the IDE CD-ROM. The update kernel enabled DMA but
I couldn't use native SATA so the SATA disks were hdc and hdd and they
seemed to share the bandwidth, ie. Soft-RAID-0 wasn't much faster than
one disk.
The machines are now running a stock 2.4.22 kernel which supports the
875P chipset better.

I didn't have to enable DMA explicitely but if necessary I would use
hdparm -d1 /dev/hde
