I went the other way, hooking a PC-style Sony Trinitron to my Mac, and at the
time, I had to have an adapter custom-made. It's a short cable, ~6" long,
cost about $25 in 1994 or so. Pre-made adapters weren't widely available at
that time (they are now),
The problem for you is that Macs sense the monitor's capabilities through
conductance between monitor pins. I don't know if they assume some defaults
when given no information.

Yeah, provide the information in the Mac -> VGA adapter (get one with DIP
switches or a selector of some kind).
But I think you might have to have the other one custom made. Custom Cable
in Tampa http://www.customcable.com/ did mine.
