I've managed to solve my own problem with http://www.questsuperstore.com.
They have adapters that go both ways.
I realized it's probably unlikely the gender changer would work, too,
unless the connections from one pin to another are equivalent under
parity. I found some pinouts, so I could probably build my own from Radio
Shack parts if I had to. But Quest has them for $2.31 plus shipping,
which is way cheaper and easier than the build-it-myself route.
I picked up a book from the library tonight. Turns out the 9-pin
connectors appeared during the early transition from EGA to VGA, and
caused many problems because they were easy to mistake for EGA connectors.
And then apparantly they stopped doing nine pins.
