Here's a cmdline for gmplayer that changes brightness and contrast when
playing avi's. Maybe it will work for DVD and VCD too.
gmplayer -vo x11 -vop eq=7:-35 -zoom -autosync 30 -cache 8192 -xy 2.5
-vop eq=7:-35 <--- this increases brightness by 7, decreases contrast by
35
