A scientist here just got a Maxtor OneTouch 200GB FireWire device and
wants to add it to his Red Hat 8 system (running kernel 2.4.18). When
the drive is connected to the computer, however, the system rapidly
locks up -- a complete freeze, with even Alt+SysRq+various unable to
bomb out of it. No kernel messages are forthcoming; the system freezes
before anything can get printed out.
The usual attempts to STFW don't seem to come up with anything.
FWIW, the host computer is a Dell Precision 450, dual-processor, with a
Texas Instruments 1394 interface.
I'm about to recommend upgrading to a later kernel to see if it's fixed,
but I'd rather hear if there's a known bug first. :)
Thanks!
