Twice before I had to return nVidia GeForce cards under warranty, and now
the replacement GeForce4 seems to be causing the monitor to be
too bright. That is, if I reduce monitor (CRT, Sony G400) brightness
to a minimum, it is still much too bright.
I'd like to narrow the possible causes of the problem and know if
there are resolutions short of replacing the card. It is under
warranty, but the last time it took three weeks turn around, which I
can't tolerate.
I've just installed a new distribution (debian 3.0r1), and assume
there's no way in software to reduce brightness. Is that correct? If I
swap in another (lesser, older) card, and the brightness returns to
normal, does that definitely mean my GeForce4 was defective?
Is there anyway to get around the long exchange time short of just
buying another card? If I do buy one, would I do better to give up on
nVidia and jump to ATI, or buy an inexpensive backup card? If I do
that, what would you recommend that is inexpensive, sufficient to play
DVD and supports 1152 x 864 16 or 24-bit color depth, and gets along
very well with Linux?
