Almost got sound working!

I have ALSA 9.8 installed under RedHat Linux 9.0,
and have configured ALSA. It seems to be configured
correctly. I can run the osstest utility and hear
the sounds generated by it. However, nothing else
seems to work. I can't play a CD using KsCD, or
play a .wav file using xmms. This is all under
KDE 3.1. Any ideas why no other audio applications
will work? Yes, the mute is off! <G>
