If the drive itself supports writing DVD-R, you can. You can find this
out by doing "cdrecord -prcap dev=X,Y,Z | grep DVD-R" and if the
resulting output contains
Does not write DVD-R media
...then the drive can't write DVD-R. Some +RW drives can write DVD-R,
some can't.

To burn DVD+R(W), use growisofs (part of the dvd+rw-tools). To burn
DVD-R, use cdrecord-prodvd, cdrecord-dvdhack, or dvdrecord.
