Thanks to those who read this.

System Specs
Linux version 2.4.18-14smp
Dual Processor PIII 800 Mhz
USB 2.0 PCI Card. Native USB on Card is 1.1

When I try to create a BackUp of my Data on a portable IDE HardDrive
connected via USB 2.0 PCI Card to my DeskTop I consistantly cause the
computer to crash. At the crash, the monitor stays on and the
X-Windows screen freezes, as does the mouse, Keyboard, I can't telnet
into the machine, ping, ftp nor run any service. The only way of
bringing the machine back up is to reset it. The crash is not related
to X-windows since I can get it to crash from the 'Text terminal mode'
as well.

I am able to mount the External Hard Drive without any problems, I can
list the directories, confirm that existing files are present and even
write small files to it. However, minutes after starting a Backup (50
Gb) the computer goes down.

Looking at /var/log/mesages shows no indication of anything prior to
the reboot and dmesg looks normal

Is this a Linux problem or a HardWare Problem? This is not the first
time I've had the computer crash on me, but nothing has been quite
this consistent.

Your help is really appreciated

Sincerely

Chris Bayley
