The NVIDIA drivers attempt to use the AGPGART, and then NVgart in that
order. I'm thinking that you possibly don't have AGPGART support in you
kernel. Check is using "insmod agpgart".
Apart from that, try building either an older, or newer version. Do you
have the appropriate kernel-headers package available (or a kernel source
tree)?
There are also a few options. I suggest running the NVIDIA installer with
the "-e" option, for expert mode. That way you can ensure things are
(ideally) being installed correctly. At the same time, ensure you select
the YES option when asked if you want to install the NVIDIA OpenGL headers.
