I got a sony walkman and a sony boombox that plays mp3 cds. While the walkman
will play every format that I've tried. I have noticed that the boombox will
only work with the joliet extension burned on a cdr. I've tried rocky ridge and
other formats and non of them worked. I also tried using cd-rw's and they didn't
work either.
I don't know about other players but that's what I found to work for me. Now
if only I could figure out how to get either of the players to honor the m3u
files!! :-(

: I think an MP3 player should only care about what files are there, not
: how they are named, right? So, my guess is that the TRANS.TBL file
: won't help. If the player is so dumb that it can't simply ignore the
: RR/Joliet extensions, I don't think it'll be smart enough to handle
: the TRANS.TBL file.
: Anyway, I suggest that you try to burn one CD with only Joliet
: extension but not RR extension to see if it works. Many hardware
: designers are still very Windows-minded. So, they may have spent time
: making it work with the Joliet extension and even devoted time to
: debug that part of the firmware. RockRidge may be a foreign word to
: them. That's why the player chokes when it's present (although it
: shouldn't!).

: But it's a handy feature! :)
: Yeah, a volume label shouldn't be necessary, and the player should
: work in the absence of it. I just wonder why they designed the player
: not to gracefully ignore the RR (and Joliet?) extension.

: Doug> Appears to be!
: Definitely Not. If it's strict, then it should *ignore* the
: extensions, instead of refusing to work with discs bearing such
: extensions. Ignoring the extensions means falling back to seeing 8.3
: file names, at most 5 levels of directories, etc.
