best choice?

I now have some money to upgrade my computer. Currently it is a PII with
256MB ram(PC100) 440bx chipset. Sure this is a great computer, and I still
love it, but I still use windows to play my games. And while Homeworld is
still a great game, I would like to play the sequel with out fighting with
my brother over the newer computer, mind you its not that great either but
it runs the game. So I'm looking for something thats not going to cost too
much, I don't know much so this maybe a bit low but so far I have a $200
limit, I can spend more but bare in mind that I should be saving this money
for college. So I've been looking at a Celeron CPU with a motherboard with
agp 8x, i can settle with 4x. Sure I wish I could keep my SB awe64 isa
card but its time to retire it. And while I have found some great choices
that would work great, well says my gaming friend who has yet to really get
into linux, I'm not sure of linux support of the motherboard/chipset. I
think it would be cool if I had the sensors to see cpu/fan/temp. So what
is my best choice for motherboards? Should I get an AMD? And don't bother
with suggestions on sound/video/lan cards, I have those covered.

Thanks
David
