Yes, indeed, many (but not all) recent USB scanners will work. IMHO USB
scanner support is *much* better than support for USB ADSL modems.
Don't let that worry you.

For info on supported scanners, see http://www.sane-project.org/. I
also see another poster recommending Epson. I'll second that. In
addition to being supported by the SANE drivers, Epson provides their
own Linux software.
(http://www.epkowa.co.jp/english/linux_e/dl_scan.html) I don't know of
any other scanner vendors that do that.
