They're most likely referring to the type of disc, not the encoding.
There is an industry standard, it's a stamped metal disc, sandwiched between
two plastic discs. You know, the kind you get when you go buy a movie at
the store. However, because it costs a lot of money to have those made for
a one-time deal (probably in the 5-figure range), the shop you went to used
a DVD{-R/+R/-RW/+RW}. Once you get into those, things get complicated, and
for any one of them, there's bound to be a player somewhere that won't
support it. Depending on the format you choose, the percentage of players
that won't cooperate could be anywhere from 3% to 30%.

While you don't describe the "struggling", at a casual guess, it's
probably either the encoding or the Macrovision copy-protection, not the
media itself that causes your machine to struggle.
