No, the modem basically equivalent to an old 56k modem. The
difference is that it runs much faster and connects to the computer
with Ethernet instead of rs232. There are other differences also, but
they are irrelevant. If your ISP uses DHCP it will be just like
connecting to a LAN. This is what you want. However, some ISPs use
PPPoE, which means that your computer needs to send a username and
password to the ISP, much like when using a regular modem. The ADSL
modem neither knows nor cares which method is being used.
