CF card reader access via libusb - possible?

Is it possible/thinkable to access a CF (compact flash) card reader
directly via libusb in the same manner as for instance an USB Camera(+ghpoto2),
i e without using usb-storage and the scsi layer?
Any app out there that already does this?
