I have an IBM Aptiva with on-board sound from (what seems to be) Crystal
Semiconductor and it doesn't work in Linux yet.
It is probably on the ISA bus. It was first suggested to me to download and
install tools for scanning the PCI bus which I managed to do because of the
monkey-level instruction given on the site I downloaded it from. No sound
device on the PCI bus it said. Then someone else suggested to download the
isapnptools which I did (version 1.26) but this time their was no
monkey-proof instruction so I have no clue as to how to install them. I
think it is safe to assume the sound chip is on the ISA bus though.
Then someone said I should try the ALSA stuff (some sound system interface
layer for Linux). I also downloaded that and it does appear to have cs423x
support which is probably what I need. Again I have no clue where to start,
how to install it. It is documented but it is too much for me at this
point. I can't tell an install script from driver code in Linix yet and if
I click something KDE asks me what program to feed the file to. Like I
would know.
Can someone give me a hand please?
Martin.
