I have an IBM laptop that I run RH9 (now Fedora) on and had a very hard
time configuring the sound. It was also a Crystal chip.
Ended up getting the driver from www.opensound.com and it installed easily
and perfectly. Their drivers are not free but there is a trial period and
they are not very expensive if you decide thats what works for you.
Might be worth checking out if you do not have success with the free
drivers.
