It depends on what you're looking to do. I've documented everything I've
done over the past year or so on my homepage (see signature below) and
otherwise, "drivers" (you are a Windows-er, aren't you?) are more based
upon kernel compiles for most things.

Debian makes that rather easy with the "kernel-package" tool, allowing you
to readily create a binary image (.deb) that installs just like a normal
package. The newer kernels support more and more things - but sometimes
you need to compile kernel modules, and having a source tree handy (and a
knowledge of building a custom kernel) is rather nice.

The drivers/modules I've compiled on debian include:

NVIDIA drivers for hardware video acceleration
winmodem (connexant)
Wireless cards (DLink Texas instruments)
Hardware sensors (temperatures, fan speeds etc)
...the list goes on - depends on what you want to do!

Debian also makes life a little easier, as if you need an additional
package in support of another, then it's fairly easy to make that happen
(yay for "apt-get install")

Some drivers are also outside of the kernel - like some XFree86 drivers.
For that, check the documentation at www.xfree.org

Cheers

Tim
