Hey, this is why the gods created LANs.

Back up your data onto a different machine, blow away the NTFS volume,
create a FAT volume, and copy it back. You'll accomplish the conversion
you have in mind _and_ have a safety backup.

After all, why on earth would you consider doing _anything_ significant
with your existing volume before securing a tested-good, reliable backup?
Therefore, securing one should be your very first step.
