firewall appliance general question

I run a debian machine continuously connected to the Internet via
variable address DSL, and am considering a simple clean hardware
firewall.

I realize that an old PC can be quite adequate, but due to limited
space, a hardware firewall appliance might be preferable.

Is there any setup advantage of such an appliance over an old PC?

As someone without expertise, I'm concerned about the difficulty of
administration. Do appliances come with their own simple interface to
set up IP tables?

Are there obvious choices for linux among these appliances?
