About 2 hours work ;-)
The dedicated applicance lifts out of its box, you plug it in, connect
to the web interface, upgrade the firmware, pick your settings from
(perhaps limited) rules, save and reboot and it's up and running.
The old PC has to come out of the cupboard, you have to
dismantle/reassemble it to make sure it's all complete and working
properly then download something like Smoothwall to put on it (~20MB),
burn it to CD, realise that a 486 won't boot off CD then work out how
to boot it from floppies instead ;-)
Ok, the PC will be more flexible and allow you to do different things.
It's likely to be more complex too but that's the usual trade off for
more functionality - it gets harder to use. If you already have the
old hardware then it's going to be cheaper but I expect it'll also be
bigger and use more power.
Does an appliance have all the functionality that you need? If it
does then you have a choice of which to use.
