CD ROM vs. CDRW on RH5.2

One of my computers has RedHat 5.2 Linux installed on it. I've been
advised that it is not possible to upgrade it, even by steps, to a
recent version of RedHat, nor even past RedHat 6, without trashing
everything on the disk. Also, the HD isn't very big, only a few GB,
and it is partitioned into Linux and DOS. I don't know one way or the
other, but meanwhile I'm trying to live with it. (Anyway, I don't
have all the intermediate distributions. I just have 7.2 and will soon
have 8.1. The RH5.2 was already on the HD when I received it.)

My big problem at the moment is that I don't have a good way to back up
this computer. If all else fails, I'll get another PC with a CDRW and
RH8 or 9, add the HD from the RH5.2 machine as a second drive to the new
one, and use the CDRW on the new system to back up the RH5.2 system.
After that, I can consider getting rid of it or finding another use
for it.

When I hit the delete key on the RH5.2 machine during bootup and look
at the boot options, I see that some of them allow the machine to boot
from a CD ROM. I don't know if RH5.2 itself had drivers for the CD ROM
or, further, for a CDRW. Also, based on what I saw under setup, I believe
that the BIOS can cope with a CR ROM, but I know so little about these
things that I don't know if that means that it can also cope with a
CDRW.

If I could install and use a CDRW under RH5.2, I could leave the HD where
it is and just back up the system as is.

Ignorantly,
Allan Adler
