backtrace() and IA64

Anyone know if backtrace() works the same on the IA64 as it does on vanilla
x86? On an x86 box, I get a postive return value greater than 1, but on
ia64, it's always 1. I need a way to get the same behavior from Linux on
ia64 as I do on a generic redhat system running on a Pentium 3 or 4
(generically x86). Thanks.
