RH9 / alsa-1.0.3 no sound

Red Hat 9 installed on a system with an Abit IS-7 motherboard with an
Intel sound chip. I installed alsa-1.0.3 and the sound card is detected,
etc. I unmute and raise the volume, but no sound ever comes out. If I
do the "Play a test sound" from the Soundcard Detection utility, the
mixer remutes and sets volume to 0 across the board.
