Hello,

I recently bought a notebook: Maxdata M-book 1000T and can't make
modem work. It seems to collide with on-board sound device, both are
manufactured by VIA (sound via86cxx and modem is via686, as far as I
can remember). I tried both slmdm (from Smart Link Modem) and pctel
(from Sourceforge) drivers and the only one that worked is Smart Link,
but not with kernel with sound support. Here is what I was doing:

1) Taking Mandrake 9.2 kernel off the shelf: downloadable
kernel-2.4.22.10mdk-1-1mdk.src.rpm doesn't seem to match pre-build
kernel:
# kernel
cd /usr/src/kernel
make mrproper
cp /boot/config-something .
make oldconfig #ask me few questions, if it matched, no questions
should be asked
make dep
cd slmdm #or pctel
make install
insmod # caused errors "unresolved symbols" - in my opinion
kernel/make dep did not prepare correct headers.

2) building and installing kernel-2.4.22.10mdk-1-1mdk.src.rpm myself -
strange, but pctel still had "unresolved symbols" and Smart Link was
working. Unfortunatelly, I can't build this kernel with sound - I
don't know why snd-via82-something can't be loaded, both in module and
built-in mode. Anyway, it seems that connection is sometimes cut and
not reestabilished (browser says: "Cannot find remote server"). I
found nothing strange in /var/log.

3) building kernel 2.6.x from www.kernel.org - I can't make config it
properly - most devices don't work and both drivers have "unresolved
symbols".

4) I got new pre-built kernel from mandrake update:
kernel-2.4.22.28mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm and corresponding
kernel-source-2.4.22-28mdk.i586.rpm - they seem to match each other
and dot-config-files seem to be prepared. Both drivers can be compiled
and installed without errors (no "unresolved symbols").
Unfortunatelly, with pctel installed kppp dials the number, logs in
and then cannot start ppp daemon. Smart Link driver lets ppp daemon
start, but two kind of incidents happen often (in less than few
minutes):
a) connection is cut, as I described earlier, I have to disconnect and
redial or
b) computer stops responding to mouse and keyborad, I have to switch
it off and boot again.

I read in the FAQ or README of pctel driver (which was not working,
ppp did not start) that incidents of ppp hanging or keyboard loosing
may be caused by sound device and modem config, which more or less
matches my experience.

To finish the story, I tried an external modem too and it worked
perfectly as I expected.

Can you comment on this? Is there something I should try before I buy
an external modem?

Thank you in advance for your advice
Piotr W.
