HP Scanjet 5370c and Vuescan

I am running Libranet Linux 2.8.1 (a debian based distribution) running
kernel 2.4.21. In the past I have had success using a scanning program
called vuescan with my USB scanner, but I can't get it to work now. I
have made sure that the sg driver is loaded and scsi_mod shows that
hpusbscsi is active. I have included the scanner group in my user
permissions all to no avail. XSANE has never been able to run this
scanner even though it detects it. Can anyone out there offer a
suggestion.
