DMA timeout error

I occasionally get:-

hdb: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x61
hdb: DMA timeout error
hdb: dma timeout error: status=0x50 { DriveReady SeekComplete }

I also occasionally get, apparently randomly, sporadic but complete system
lockups seemingly when there is intensive i/o (e.g. wget-ing chunks of
websites, or doing rsync on a large number of files. I don't know whether
they're connected, but hdb would be being used. The system stuff is on hda.

I have 2.6.5-7.75-smp with SuSe 9.1 64 bit on dual opteron on K8T
Master2-FAR with 2 Maxtor 120GB pata drives as master and slave (I should
have preferred tham on separate ide channels but the dvd recorder is the
primary).

Is this most likely to be a kernel or chipset issue, or could it be due to
faulty hadware, cable, or a heating problem (I noticed that the rear of
the drive is only 1cm from a 1GB memory card)?
