    Atlantic,

    Do you get any error messages during boot up? You can use the command
    dmesg to review the boot messages stored in the system's ring buffer (I
    think that's what they call it). Basically, typing dmesg will display
    all of the startup messages that you see displayed in rapid sequence
    during boot. If you see something amiss in there that's related to the
    floppy it might help you diagnose the problem. Also, if you're using the
    floppy during a logged in session, are you unmounting it before pressing
    the eject button? If not you may be damaging data stored on the floppy
    and I am guessing that you might also get some type of error message on
    shutdown.

    Anyway, just a few things to think about.
