A Laptop would be an overkill for that purpose. I've seen IDE
harddisk "cases" which have in-built card-readers and a "transfer"
button. Insert a memory card and press the button, the files in the
card get transferred to a FAT partition of the harddisk automatically.
You can of course connect the case to a computer via USB, and for the
one (belonging to my brother) I've tried, Linux does see the harddisk
as well as the card slots. So, the case functions also as a USB
harddisk case and a USB card reader. It's is not big (just a little
bit bigger than a 3.5" laptop harddisk and is certainly smaller than
10 rolls of 35mm films) and is quite light. It's meant to be carried
around. Such devices are quite cheap and easy to find in Hong Kong
and China. But I myself still stick to traditional films and cameras
because of the lower price/quality ratio.
