I have used various RedHat, Suse and Debian desktops for a couple of
years. Linux has always been solid as a rock. Until, lately as I try new
USB stuff.
It would seem that a system with USB installed can get Windows-like
flakey. I realise that sometimes a particular set of hardware doesn't
like a particular setup of software, but I have three totally different
systems and all have roughly the same problems despite my loading the
latest, oldest, and all the other drivers I can find.
Such as - intermittently...
A drive will be seen, but partitions will not be recognised.
or...
Partitions will be seen, but won't mount.
Stop the USB driver and reload and the above problems will probably be
cleared up.
Other problems...
During a file transfer sometimes the message "USB Bulk Timeout" will come
up. At this time the systems is almost totally hosed. Sometimes I can
bring up another session and kill the processes, but at other times is is
a Windows-like hardlock and reset is the only option.
"USB Channel is busy". This is interesting since it will come up without
me asking for anything on a USB port or in fact, even if nothing is
plugged in. Nothing will mount after this message appears until a reboot
or driver restart.
I use both AMD and P4s.
Intel, Gigibyte, and Abit motherboards. All drives, USB and local, are
Western Digital and Seagate. Everything else is pretty vanilla.
Anyway. This isn't a request for a problem fix since I am not sure what
to fix yet. Just a query about the stability that others are seeing (or
not seeing) on their systems. Anybody else having similar problems?
