OK, I have figured out more exactly what causes them. I noticed that its
brightness in screen 1 is due to the position of an rxvt (xterm will do
too), with its left edge against the screen's left. This brightness can be
replicated on any of the 8 virtual screens. Moving the rxvt away or past
the edge makes the screen darken. So my guess is that the bright strip of
its scroll bar acts as a means for the monitor to synchronize. I still
don't know what to do about this, besides conclude that the card is well and
truly hosed.

Logic is a systematic method of coming to
the wrong conclusion with confidence.
