I was thinking of building some servers - file server, email server, some
compute boxes, etc. as an upgrade to some existing hardware. It looks like
it is significantly more expensive to get redundant power supplies, so I
was wondering if I can use some DC-DC power supplies in the servers,
running off say, 24V or telecom 48V, or such. I haven't been able to find
much on the web in the way of hardware I need for this. How do I get
the power to the machines... does anybody make units with DC outputs with
a battery backup?
I was under the impression that telco equipment uses such a system, and it
seems like this would be a way to get a more reliable power supply that is
external, with ample cooling, and at the same time, remove the heat output
and stress from the server cases.
Any pointers and advice is appreciated.
